How to Choose the Best Travel Protection Plan for You

Traveling the world is full of excitement, but not every trip goes exactly according to plan. Travel insurance can provide a wide variety of benefits to give you peace of mind when booking the trip of your dreams.

Whether traveling for business or pleasure, solo or with family, planning a relaxing stay at the beach or an adventurous trek through the mountains, there is a travel protection plan for everyone. But with so many plan options and companies, how do you know which one to pick? It largely depends on the type of traveler you are and the type of trip you’re taking. IMG’s iTravelInsured travel protection plans provide varying coverage levels, and below we’ll break down which one could be the right fit for you.

Price-Conscious Travelers

If you’re looking for travel protection on a budget, consider iTravelInsured Choice, iTravelInsured Travel Lite, or iTravelInsured Essential.

If your trip costs are $10,000 or less per person, iTravelInsured Choice is likely the iTravelInsured plan for you. Choice, our most popular travel protection plan, offers benefits to address the most common issues travelers encounter, like trip cancellations, delayed baggage, and medical emergencies (including Primary medical coverage). This well-rounded plan also includes access to telehealth services through Teladoc, and IMG’s 24/7 assistance line, with in-house experts trained to help travelers in an emergency. It’s ideal for families traveling domestically or cruising abroad, couples and solo travelers exploring the world, weekend getaways, business travel, and nearly every trip in between.

iTravelInsured Choice also offers four optional add-ons, which can be purchased separately or combined, allowing you to customize your coverage based on your trip. Purchase the Enhanced Medical add-on to increase your medical expense and emergency medical evacuation coverage. Consider adding Cancel For Any Reason/Interrupt For Any Reason coverage if you want the ability to recover some of your non-refundable trip costs if you must cancel your trip for a reason not otherwise covered in the plan. The Sport add-on offers coverage for medical issues due to adventure sports and increases protections on key sports equipment and baggage should it get lost or delayed en route to your destination. Purchase the Cruise add-on to include cruise-specific benefits and covered reasons in your plan. Also consider iTravelInsured Choice Cruise if you’re cruising as a family for kids-included pricing.1

If you’re spending more than $10,000 per person on your trip and are looking for additional coverage for rental cars, benefits specifically for pet owners, and higher maximum limits, consider iTravelInsured Travel SE or iTravelInsured Travel LX instead.

Family Vacation

Traveling alone is expensive enough, but when you’re traveling with a family, you could be looking at several plane tickets, hotel accommodations, activities, and more. It can add up quickly! While you may be excited to make memories with your kids, it’s natural to have concerns about how much you’re spending. Most iTravelInsured travel protection plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits to help you recoup any prepaid, non-refundable travel costs when your plans are disrupted for a covered reason. Examples of possible covered reasons include illness, natural disasters, job loss or involuntary job relocation, complications of pregnancy, and the death of a family member or traveling companion.2

iTravelInsured ChoiceiTravelInsured Travel SE and iTravelInsured Travel LX plans can be great for family travel, and their trip cancellation benefits can refund up to 100% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason.

All three plans also offer an optional Cancel/Interruption For Any Reason add-on.3 If you must cancel your trip for a reason not otherwise covered by the plan, you can receive up to 75% of your non-refundable insured trip cost. Cancel For Any Reason would apply if you had to cancel your trip over fears of COVID-19, had an unexpected family issue come up that wasn’t overwise covered, or just decided the week before your trip you didn’t want to travel anymore. Knowing you won’t lose all your money if you must call off your trip can help put you at ease when planning that Disney trip or Caribbean cruise you’ve been debating for years.

If you’re spending more than $10,000 per person on your trip and looking for a more benefit-rich option, consider iTravelInsured Travel SE or iTravelInsured Travel LX. Both plans insure trip costs of up to $150,000 per person and include rental car damage and theft coverage. If you’re renting a car for your travels, this benefit on your travel protection plan can cover up to $40,000 if your rental car is stolen or damaged in a situation beyond your control.

Cruises

In addition to the many trip cancellation and interruption covered perils you have come to expect, iTravelInsured Choice Cruise includes unique covered reasons for cruisers, including if excessive water levels or a cruise port closure end your trip. This plan also offers benefits that can offer compensation if mechanical issues, virus outbreaks, natural disasters, or major itinerary changes impact your ship. This product is ideal for families as it offers kids-included pricing, giving coverage to one child 17 and under per each insured adult at no additional cost.

With iTravelInsured Choice Cruise, you do not have the option to purchase any of the add-ons available on iTravelInsured Choice. If you’re looking for a plan that offers these cruise-specific benefits but also has Cancel For Any Reason/Interrupt For Any Reason Coverage or Enhanced Medical coverage, purchase the base iTravelInsured Choice plan, select the Cruise add-on and any other add-on you need for your trip.4

Pet Owners

iTravelInsured Travel SE and iTravelInsured Travel LX offer benefits specifically for those with pets. Pets are like family, but unfortunately, they can’t always travel with us. While away from home, you may need to board your dog at a commercial kennel. If your flight home is delayed by a certain number of hours, pet kennel benefits can help you cover the costs of extended boarding until you’re able to make it home. Travel SE offers up to $100 per day with a $300 maximum per pet, while Travel LX offers $100 per day with a $500 maximum per pet. These plans also offer trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits if a pet or service animal suffers a sickness, injury, or death.

Luxury Travel

When it comes to luxury travel, consider the iTravelInsured Travel LX plan as an option. When planning a getaway with a luxury price tag, you want to know your investment is protected. Travel LX insures up to a maximum trip cost of $150,000 and offers the widest variety of benefits out of the iTravelInsured Travel Series plans.5 Lose your passport while eating and drinking your way through Italy and wondering how you’ll be able to board the plane home? All iTravelInsured travel protection plans also include non-insurance travel assistance services that can help you replace a passport or important travel documents in the event they’re lost or stolen. Luxury vacations often take you to remote locations, away from it all. With iTravelInsured Travel LX, if you sustain an acute, severe, or life-threatening condition, you can worry less about the difficulty of getting to a hospital if there are no treatment centers in the area. This travel protection plan offers up to $1,000,000 in medical evacuation benefits and up to $10,000 per person for the search and rescue benefit.

Adventurers & Sports Enthusiasts

For some, the ideal vacation isn’t lying on the beach relaxing with a drink in hand; it’s a trip that gets the adrenaline pumping! If this is the case for your next trip, consider iTravelInsured Choice with the Sport add-on. Whether you’re headed on a ski trip or planning a golf outing, you need the right equipment. If your sports equipment or baggage is lost, stolen, damaged, or delayed in transit to your destination, the Sport add-on can reimburse you up to the maximum benefit amount to buy or rent alternative equipment. Don’t be afraid to bring your best fishing rod, snowboard, or hunting gear because this travel protection plan has the coverage to get you back in the game should the unexpected happen to your gear.

Adventure trips can come with injuries; the Sport add-on also includes coverage for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses related to hazardous sports, that may otherwise not be covered.

If your trip cost more than $10,000 per person, you should consider the iTravelInsured Travel LX plan which insures trip cost up to $250,000 per person. It also includes coverage for renting equipment if yours is damaged, lost, stolen, or delayed more than 12 hours.

Business Travel

If you’re traveling for business, you may care more about what you’re bringing with you than where you’re going and when you get there. iTravelInsured ChoiceiTravelInsured Travel LX and iTravelInsured Travel SE offer great benefits if you arrive in town, but your bags don’t. If your bag is delayed a certain number of hours or is lost or stolen, these benefits may reimburse you for the costs to buy necessary items up to the maximum benefit amount. That means you can go out and replace your office-appropriate clothes, instead of showing up in the T-shirt you wore on a 12-hour plane ride.

Timeshares, Staying With Family, & Trips with Limited Non-Refundable Costs

If you’re staying at a timeshare, staying with friends/family, or taking a trip where most of your costs are refundable, you may not need a plan with trip cancellation and interruption coverage. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider travel insurance. Should you need medical or emergency coverage while away from home, iTravelInsured Choice Departure offers primary medical benefits and non-insurance services to cover you. Whether you sprain your ankle and need to see a doctor, need a telehealth appointment for a non-emergency medical issue, or need an emergency evacuation back home, iTravelInsured Choice Departure can help. It also offers post-departure benefits for other common travel issues like travel delays and lost luggage. It does not include trip cancellation or trip interruption coverage, which is typically the most expensive part of a travel insurance plan.

No matter your reason for traveling, it’s beneficial to purchase travel protection as soon as you make a trip deposit or payment. Want to learn more about each iTravelInsured travel protection plan or ready to buy now? Get a quote today by entering your trip details on the plan page
